Important Topic : The EHEC-Problem

Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC)

EHEC are recognized as the primary cause of hemorrhagic colitis (HC) or bloody diarrhea, which can progress to the potentially fatal hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). EHEC are characterized by the production of verotoxin or Shiga toxins (Stx). Although Stx1 and Stx2 are most often implicated in human illness, several variants of Stx2 exist.
EHEC infections are mostly food or water borne and have implicated undercooked ground beef, raw milk, cold sandwiches, water, unpasteurized apple juice and vegetables

In relation to our filtering units (series PERKEO+H²O²+UV) we investigated whether our filters can give a positive contribution to the issue.

Our filters (Series PERKEO with UV and H²O²) are constructed in a way to give a threefold security on bacteriological control:

  1. Solids (sand, leafs and other solids) are restrained by a quartzite filter.
  2. An effective UV-installation kills bacteria of the E.Coli group of the filtered water.
  3. The addition of hydrogen-peroxide stabilizes filtered water bacteriologically. The hydrogen-peroxide itself is broken down by organic matter or degraded forming water an oxygen.
  4. Conclusion: Our filtering units (series PERKEO + UV+H²O²) give an efficient contribution to reduction of EHEC risk in process water.
